This past long weekend in September saw downhill riders from Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal descend on the Giba Gorge Bike Park outside Durban (KZN) for the inaugural GP vs. ZN Inter-provincial Downhill race, sponsored by Mongoose, NSRMTB and Scooters Pizza. The race followed both an individual scoring as well as a group scoring for the province that would walk away with the fantastic floating trophy…

This inter-provincial race between Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal was the brainchild of Gravity All Stars Downhill MTB Club, or GAS DH for short, a downhill specific club from Gauteng. Since it was a long weekend, the Gauteng riders arrived already on Friday, Heritage Day, to play around on the Giba Gorge Bike Park trails. The weather was great and all had a fantastic time, making the most of the jump park, cross-country, freeriding and downhill courses. Most of them were camping at Giba and got a bit worried towards the afternoon when the clouds starting building. Well, their fears were warranted as the whole night they were treated to the gentle patter of a coastal drizzle on their waterproof – yeah right – tents.

Saturday was official practice day and also saw the arrival of the KZN riders. Practice started at 10:00 and run the whole day until 16:00. The day was marked by sporadic spells of this coastal drizzle that made the course very interesting to say the least. Yet all the riders made the most of it and the two shuttle trucks were constantly full with riders going up and enjoying the course. A big thank you must go to First Line and Fine Metals who sponsored the shuttles. The medics were also out in full force and were looking after our riders. One of the novices had a pretty bad fall just before the step-up jump and riding was stopped for a while to treat the rider. He was later stretchered away by ambulance. The end result is a broken rib and concussion but he was discharged that same night. Fortunately he was wearing a Leatt brace and protective armour that prevented him from a serious neck injury. The riders then went on undeterred with practice, with the final riding being done at the jump park. Both GP and KZN dirt jumpers treated the onlookers to some awesome tricks. That evening all the riders got together for a catered braai and it was great to see everyone hanging around until late, swapping stories of the day and just chilling with their fellow downhillers. There was no sense of competition; only some friendly banter and challenges being passed around. This was the spirit of downhill at it’s best.

Sunday morning started early with practice from 08:30. The riders were treated to an excellent sunny day, with the track already dried out from the previous day, making for some exciting and fast racing. The race itself would be determined with a single race run only, very much World Cup style where one run counts everything. The riders were seeded in their provinces and we saw 28 riders from KZN and 19 riders from Gauteng make their way up to the start line. Both provinces selected their top 3 riders, being 1 Elite, 1 Sub Vet and 1 Junior who would come down last – representing their province. The official race run started at 11:00 sharp, with Dave Dinkelman making the first run down at the historic GP vs. ZN Inter-provincial downhill race. Spectators were then treated to wave after wave of riders coming down, each competing against his own time while contributing points for their province. Points were allocated to each of the 47 riders, with the total scores from the top 17 times from each province adding up to the overall score.

So just before midday noon, all the riders completed their runs, leaving only the top 3 from each province to come down. All the riders then walked up the course to line the sides, cheering on their riders. First rider out was Tim Bentley, Junior rider for KZN on his GT Fury. He was then followed by David Hogan, the Junior from Gauteng, also on a GT Fury. Tim however made the most of the track in a time of 1:36.18 (placing him 2nd overall), vs. the 1:50.23 of David, who placed 13th overall. Both these riders will move up to Elites in 2011 and it is encouraging that we have such talent moving up in the ranks. Then it was time for the Sub-Vets with Dean Henning from KZN coming down in a time of 2:01.87, but he was no match for Matt Smith, the top Sub-Vet rider from Gauteng, who finished the course in a time of 1:49.87, placing him 12th overall. Matt rides a pimped up Mongoose Boot’r and his win will make the Mongoose family happy. The last 2 riders up were the top Elites from KZN and Gauteng. Hayden Brown represented KZN and he just destroyed the track in the fastest time of the day at 1:35.86 on his Mongoose Boot’r. He was followed by Brad Illingworth from Gauteng with a valiant effort on his Giant Glory, but his time of 1:40.25 was not enough to pip the Elites class. Brad placed a well deserved 3rd overall. So when all the points were finally added up it was clear – and somewhat expected – that KZN won with 634 points versus the brave effort from Gauteng with 479 points.

“For us this race was all about creating a fun but professional event in the off-season involving most of our provinces. We are extremely happy with the outcome and the exposure for our sponsors. The sport of Downhill was the winner here today” said Christiaan Viljoen, event organiser and chairman of GAS DH. Brian Dinkelman from KZN MTB said that “Our riders had a fantastic time, they loved the format and this informal rivalry between KZN and Gauteng. This event has raised the bar in Downhill racing and we look forward to make this event an annual institution”.

The top 3 riders in each province all received prize vouchers from Scooters Pizza. They were:

Payet who was on the Subaru team with Fabien Barel in 2009 joins the Morewood fold and has to be the tallest rider on the World Cup circuit. CousCous is fresh off having a broken toe operated on and is looking for better luck this year. If ever there was a rider who knew how to market himsef its Fabien. Even the boss Pat Morewood came out, rode and provided the laughs for the day. Several other videographers and photographers from France were present doing their thing so hopefully we can get a link to their footage when it is released.

Tim Keep from Pure Adventure Wear has been reworking the Freeride course at Giba Gorge…

From Tim:

With summer rolling in, the Pure Adventure Wear Freeride Trail at Giba Gorge is receiving a bit of a make over: with upgrades to the existing trail and a couple of new lines being worked on.

The see-saw at the end of the north-shore laddering has been replaced with a launch. The see-saw is being moved to run as an alternative line off the laddering for those who are not quite ready to launch themselves into mid-air.
There will also be a new line that will run off the existing trail. This new line will incorporate a couple of rock-drops with more laddering and a new exit back onto the 3 Bridges Trail.
A whole new run in to the trail has already been built, with a narrow ladder bridge over a sink-hole to get you into the ‘zone’. The new entrance starts 50 metres earlier and still runs off the existing ‘Main Line’ trail. Just look out for the big Pure Adventure Wear board at the new entrance.

This week we are giving away a season pass to Giba Gorge mountain bike park valued at over R2000.00!

This week we have our biggest competition yet. We have teamed up with the good folks at Giba Gorge and are giving away a years free membership to Giba Gorge to one lucky NSRMTB supporter. Giba Gorge is arguably the best MTB park in South Africa, with some of the best facilities you will ever see. Situated in KZN, they have 100’s of kilometers of trails, Freeride, DH, Super D, dirt jumps, a BMX track, and thats just the stuff you can ride.

They also have an on sight bike store, conference center, picnic facilities, as well as an awesome resturant. To stand the chance of winning a years free entry to the park all you have to do is the following.

SMS the word NSRGIBA to 34378. SMS’s cost R2.50 and the contest will run until July 3rd. COMPETITION IS CLOSED.

Rules:
• You may enter as many times as you like.
• The prize may not be exchanged for money.
• Judges decision is final.
