As the 2012 DH World Cup draws closer, more and more teams are finalising their product and riders testing in preparation for the coming race season. Local KZN pro downhiller Tim Bentley will once again race for Hutchinson Unitedride, as well Mick and Tracy Hannah…

Starting out as a conversation in the Morewood Bikes factory some years ago, the United Ride team was created and has come a long way since then. A diverse race team with riders hailing from France, South Africa and now Australia. For the 2012 season United Ride gains some great sponsors and continues to grow the team as we are proud to announce Hutchinson as our title sponsor and the signing of Mick and Tracey Hannah.

Mick Hannah is one of the most respected riders on the circuit known for his solid work ethic, toughness and training:

Mick Hannah

“I’m really excited to be joining with United Ride. We have very similar goals for the next 2 years and I feel like with the support of Morewood and Hutchinson and the great atmosphere within the team we can achieve all that we set out to do. I am also very excited about the opportunity to travel and race with Tracey. She is really focused right now and I think that together, along with the rest of the team, we will have a great season! Thanks very much to everyone that’s getting behind us! It’s going to be a great year!”

In the past Tracey Hannah has shown she could win by taking the Junior Womans World title. Her motivation and speed are still there as she will participate at select World Cup rounds in 2012:

Tracey Hannah

“It’s always been in the back of my mind!
Racing on the “World Cup Circuit” again! What is even more amazing, I will be racing right beside my big bro “Sick Mick” who taught me some of the things I know…… ha! I am so excited to be on the Hutchinson United Ride team, riding for Morewood bikes. Not only to be back racing but to be on a team that is going to help us achieve some of the goals that we have set out to achieve.
There is nothing better than feeling confident and ready going into a season, and because of United Ride we both can relax knowing we will be on one of the best teams out there, riding with some awesome new gear.

I am looking forward to the racing season. I can’t wait to see what unfolds in the up and coming months. I couldn’t be happier!”

Fabien “ CousCous” Cousinié / Team Manager-Rider

“In 2011, I’ve been in the top 20 during the first half of the season, I wanna do it again in 2012 but for the entire season! My study finally achieved, it’s going to be my first school free season, can’t wait for the PMB!
As a team manager, I’m really happy of the riders. More than the performance aspect, everyone has the same spirit which announce: good times!”

Tim Bentley

Our South African rider stays with the team for 2012 and will be racing the clock with style once again. After a solid first season on the World Cup circuit we are certain that he will keep improving and reach his potential.

« I am really excited to be on the team again this year! I had such a great time and i am looking forward to see what happens this season. I learnt alot last year and i hope i can use the experience to help me ! »

We are also glad to welcome Guillaume Cauvin who finished 3rd at the last Junior World Championship in Champéry. Guillaume fits in perfectly with the team’s spirit as he is motivated, relaxed and trains hard so it is a pleasure for us to help a young rider like him:

Guillaume “JR” Cauvin

“It’s a great opportunity for me to ride as part of the Hutchinson United Ride which is composed with such good riders. It will help me to improve my skills for sure! We’ve already done some training camp and there is good vibes. I love my MOREWOOD!”

A NEW NAME GOING INTO 2012:

United Ride Team is very proud of its new partnership with Hutchinson (www.hutchinsontires.com). The brand has worked a lot on the development of some new tire compounds and profiles. The team has run some tests with the new tires and are confident to have them keeping their Morewood’s on track this season:

Arnaud Zumaglia / Hutchinson Marketing Director

“Genetically links to competition, Hutchinson built its success and reputation with the performance and quality of its products. On all kind of terrain and in all kind of circumstances, road ride or mountain ride, Hutchinson works for more than one century with the biggest names of this sport to improve its nowadays products and create the future ones.
With no doubts downhill is the more demanding discipline for the tyres, that’s why we are really proud of those new objectives with the Hutchinson United Ride. An cosmopolitan UCI team with a strong potential with whom we expect to see some international podium in 2012.
A few new tyres will equip the bikes : Dzo, Squale, Toro or Cougar which ones will lead our riders toward the best results.”

Richard Carter / Morewood Bikes (www.morewoodbikes.com)

“It is a great pleasure for us to be moving into our 4th year supporting the United Ride team with bikes, even if not as title sponsor. They are effectively our factory team and with the addition of Mick, Tracey and Guillaume, we really believe that we have one of the strongest teams on the circuit. From its inception United Ride has worked tirelessly in the development of all Morewood products, and we look forward to their continued involvement. It will be great to have them in our home town of Pietermaritzburg for the first World Cup race in March”

Once again we would like to welcome as one of our main partners, the online bike shop ALLTRICKS. Alltricks’s team is passionate, motivated and really efficient and that aids us in functioning efficiently as a professional race team:

AllTricks (www.alltricks.fr)

“Alltricks.fr is really proud to be a part of the United Ride Team and to support each riders for the next two seasons. Its team manager’s energy and the strong potential of its pilots seduced us straight away. We were looking for a team to join and an international adventure to share and confirm our product offer competitiveness. The partnership represents for us a real showcase of what is our offer in Dh, Freeride, Dirt and 4X.
Working with all the team’s sponsors and selling their products will help us being able to advise better our customers.”

Our official 2012 team presentation will be held a few days before the first World Cup in March where we will unveil our gear sponsor and other news.

We would like to thank everyone from our sponsors to the media to our fans for their support. The future has never been so exciting and our adventure keeps going with the same core ideal : DREAM RIDE SHARE.

The hand made South African bicycle brand MOREWOOD continues to show it’s involvement in mountain bike racing and will support for the third year, Fabien “Couscous” Cousinié’s team now called MOREWOOD UNITEDRIDE…

The 2011 MOREWOOD UNITEDRIDE will consist of three factory racers. As one of the strongest French rider, the legendary Mickael Pascal joins the team.

« I’m really motivated for the coming season. After two years of dealing everything on my own, I’m happy to find a team of passionate people who will give me the support I need. It’s like a new start for me. I can’t wait to ride my Morewood Makulu».

Tim Bentley, a young south african picked out straight of Pietermaritzburg, will make his debut on the world cup circuit and he’s more excited than ever to represent a brand from his country.

« It’s like a dream come true for me to do all the world cup circuit and to race in Europe and North America. And I’m on the official team of Morewood, a brand from my hometown, I couldn’t ask for better »

Fabien Cousinié, founder of the team, will use is versatility to represent properly. He talks a little bit about his new structure :

« It’s very nice to see that all the good work gave a good result. It will be a big step forward for the team with a new structure and especially with 2 new riders. For everybody that saw Mick riding a 65cm handlebar well for next year you will finally see him with the new generation handlebar. Tim will be like my little brother for next season and when I look at his motivation, I’m sure he will do well. On my side, I’ll keep having fun in Dh, 4X and Enduro and in few months I’ll be done with school so I hope to be more focus on racing ».

Tim Bentley

UNITEDRIDE and MOREWOOD are happy to share the same vision. MOREWOOD co-owner, Richard Carter, added « Patrick Morewood and I are stoked to be continuing our association with the extremely versatile Fabien ‘CousCous’ Cousinie for a third year. French legend Mickael Pascal and talented up and comer, Pietermaritzburg local Tim Bentley, are welcome additions to the new Unitedride team. From a testing standpoint it always an advantage to start the season off in your own backyard. Don’t be surprised if you see some unconditional bike setup or a prototype or two rolling around the pits. See you in Africa

About videos, the team sets the bar higher and creates their own production structure, UNITEDRIDE PRODUCTION. Victor Charrier will be behind the camera and at the editing, and Fabien Cousinié will be producer.

MOREWOOD UNITEDRIDE’s team presentation movie will be release in April and will then announce all sponsors.

This presentation is already a first victory for the 2010 season. It was a long way and It took a lot of phone calls, mails, hours and hours of work to put all the pieces together.
With the help of our sponsors and friends finally we were able to make the team evolve to the international level.

To celebrate, the team spent 1 month in South Africa, back to where it all began. It has been a good opportunity to work on Fabien and Florent’s bikes geometry, to ride, to spend time with MOREWOOD’s staff and to bring back nice pictures.

United team are passionate people brought together to realise their dreams all in conviviality, have a good time and eventually jump on podiums…

Morewood Bikes, Patrick Morewood: “MOREWOOD BIKES is happy to support the MOREWOOD UNITED team for the second year. After a promising first season, we know what Fabien is capable of, and we’re also very happy to see Florent join the team. As he’s shown in the past, he has a lot of potential and we hope he’ll have a fantastic come back season on his custom made Makulu.
We wish both Fabien and Florent all the best for the 2010 World Cup season and we’re glad that these two frenchies share the same values and enthusiasm as us at MOREWOOD BIKES”

Payet who was on the Subaru team with Fabien Barel in 2009 joins the Morewood fold and has to be the tallest rider on the World Cup circuit. CousCous is fresh off having a broken toe operated on and is looking for better luck this year. If ever there was a rider who knew how to market himsef its Fabien. Even the boss Pat Morewood came out, rode and provided the laughs for the day. Several other videographers and photographers from France were present doing their thing so hopefully we can get a link to their footage when it is released.

By Press Release:

Team Kenda Morewood had a spectacular weekend as Mitch Delfs takes 9th place at the 5th World Cup round of the season, in Maribor, Slovenia. Mitch Delfs was looking fast all weekend on the frighteningly fast track in Slovenia. Filled with an enormous amount of roots and natural doubles, and made slick by torrential rains on Saturday, Delfs smashed thought the rocks of the infamous rock garden, barely keeping to together.

Mitch Delfs, Kenda Morewood Team Rider:
“My run was blistering up top. My Kenda Morewood was hookin’ up all the way until I got a bit tired. I got tired but held on and made one little mistake at the bottom. I punched through it and finally got into the top 10, first one of the season. Hopefully there is many more to come. I think it was the moustache that did it, aerodynamics. It kept me down on the floor so I could turn better. It looks good as well.”

Mitch Delfs now heads to Canada to spend a few weeks training in Bromont, Quebec for the next 2 rounds of the World Cup in 4 weeks.

Team mate Nathan Rennie was not present at Maribor as he is back in Australia in order to help heal up a few nagging injuries and train for the World Championships at home in Canberra, a track where he raced to a second place finish last year.

Just signed 3rd Kenda Morewood Team Rider, Fabien “Cous Cous” Cousinie would end up in 62nd place after having a trip over the bars mid course.

Fabien Cousinie, Kenda Morewood Team Rider:
“I had put on dry tires and it was going great on the parts that were exposed to the sunshine. I made a big error in the woods and I lost it completely in the rocks. I had lots of arm-pump at the bottom and I couldn’t hang on or brake. I had a big crash because of this and then just cruised to the bottom. I’m heading home now to train for the French National Championships and the Canadian World Cup rounds. My bike was perfect and I am really happy with the new team. I just need a new set of arms now!”

Peter Siulczynski, Kenda Morewood Team Manager:
“We are very happy how this race went for Kenda Morewood Team. I was quite sure about Mitchell’s performance on tracks like Maribor and obviously the 9th place is very satisfied for all of us. Additionally, the fact that Mitch was the 6th fastest at the first split time and made a mistake in the bottom part gives us some hope for even higher finishes in the future. Also Fabien was riding very solid. Unfortunately, he had problem with his arms and crashed in the race run. Fabien will be able to rest a bit before the next World Cup in Mont Saint Anna, Canada and we hope for a good result also for him.”

Rider run teams seems to be catching on with the World Cup and Morewood United has just added itself to that list. Comprised of French riders Fabien Cousinie and Nicolas Ortiz the Morewood satellite team made their debut at the opening round of the series. Cousinie finished the day with a 22nd place but was hindered by a broken right hand side pedal during his race run making him fall short of his goal. His teamate Ortiz claimed 49th and the two riders now prepare for the next round being held in France.

The team came about after Cousinie served an internship at Morewood Bikes in Pietermaritzberg, South Africa which in turn saw himself and Nico riding their new Makulu model. Both riders enjoy spending time in South Africa and Ortiz especially likes the fact that the locals walk around “with their hands on their hearts”. Fabien and Nico will contest all the French nationals and if their results stay up there will attend all the World Cup stops with their mechanic Bruno DeLabre. Once back home in France Cousine is keen to claim back his 07 national title lost the previous year due to a back injury. On choosing Ortiz as a team mate he had this to say: “I like him because he is crazy and can be very fast!”.

Morewood United is comprised of the following sponsors and thanks them for their support in 2009: Morewood bikes, Mavic, Bos Suspension, 564 Clothink, Lourdess vtt, Black Mountain Snow Scoot and Leatt Brace.

This is French DH rider Fabien Cousinie in both French and English…

Where do you come from in France?

English: I come from Castres about 1 hour from Toulouse the big South West French town which is the headquarter of Airbus the best aircraft company of the world . Curretly I live in Pau close to the West coast in order to finish my business school.

You were in pretty good shape when I rode with you. Do you have a personal trainer?

English: Yes, I have a personal trainer it’s Jean Baptiste Wiroth . Sometime it’s not the most exciting part of our sport but if you expect some result in Downhill and 4X you have to be fit.

What are your plans for 2009?

English: Lot of change for 2009, I gonna make my own team with other fast French rider. I am pretty proud because the prestigious Morewood brand gonna be my tittle sponsor, I gonna make most of the World Cup series, all French national races, some IXS European series.

You have competed in Snow Cross before. What are those races like? What tires do you run?

English: I raced in mountain snow race for a couple of years now. I like it so much there are lot of drift, jumps are very very fat, biggest I ever done more about 25 metres! The spirit it’s pretty relax even if there are lot of crashes! I use mud tires that’s the best tires. But since 1 year I ride in Snowscoot it’s a bike with snow board instead of wheels ( got to www.snowscoot-blackmountain.com ). I did my first ever Snowscoot race this year and I finish 3rd of the French championship of boarder cross!!! It was very unexpected… Maybe a new career?

You have traveled quite a lot, how does riding in South Africa compare to other places?

English: Actually I really enjoy SA riding because I feel there are a huge mountain bike and motorbike culture, and it’s pretty good. A place like Giba Gorge it’s awesome all the different mountain culture in a same place moreover with a restaurant which make best wrap I ever eat! About tracks, obviously you haven’t same mountain as France but you squeeze out the best of your trail.

It was pretty cool of Greg Minnaar to invite you to stay with him here. Can only make you feel faster hanging out with the World Cup champ no?

English: Yes , for sure it was pretty cool to hang out with Greg. He is a very friendly and fun guy, I haven’t really ridden a lot of downhill with Greg but I did a lot of different activities, motorbikes MX Trial, Jetskiing, surf, XC. I think if I learn one riding lesson it’s maybe ride more relax , in everything Greg does he is pretty relax. But what I improve so much with Greg it’s maybe my “drink skills” he is very good and fast too to drink beer! Maybe better than downhill

Is “Cous Cous” your nickname or something we just called you?

English: It’s just my nick name. I think is from my name Cousinié, the first part of my name sound close of as there are a lot of Fabien on the circuit everybody call me CousCous

Will you be back for the World Cup event in Pietermaritzberg?

English: For sure, I’m very exited to ride my new Morewood Makulu at Cascades

You compete in both 4x and DH but which one do you prefer racing?

English: DH is still my main specialty but when the track is technical I’m able to do well. So I ride both.

How do you train with the bad weather and snow in France?

English: Is not that easy as South Africa, but I do lot of snow activities like skiing and Snowscoot. I do a lot of BMX and physical training like road bike, XC, running and bodybuilding.

You did pretty well in the 2006 Megavalanche. What was that race like?

English: It’s maybe the most frightening race that I raced. It’s an enduro race so it’s a very long downhill with some pedal sections. It’s the biggest enduro race of the world. There are more than 1300 riders and the matter is that we start on the snow at 3300 m all together and we ride about 120 km/h at the start this is what it ‘s scary. This race is very long about 1h for the best riders. Now it’s a very famous race and I pretty glad because I finished 5th.

You took the national French DH title in 07 but then hurt your back in 08. Are you all healed up now?

English: Yes today I recover 100% of my ability but it was a pretty strange injury because it’s not been broken but its stay a long time sore. Actually it the same crash than (Josh) Bryceland at Maribor World Cup, it was on the same section.

You bought a dirt bike while you are visiting here and I was impressed that you have the same body positioning when you corner of James “Bubba” Stewart! Both of you ride over the front of the bike. I think you should try some MX races?

English: hahaha, I’m still wondering if you are kidding me. But I think I’m as fast as Bubba when he were 6 years old! But you know I haven’t really rode in MX before, but at PMB I rode a lot thanks to Richard Carter because he bring on tracks at the first time and then he lend me his truck. Before leave SA I rode with Greg and there I saw I wasn’t that fast. I gonna carry on to ride MX and maybe do some local races for the pleasure and that’s it. In MX fast guys get a unbelievable level impossible to catch for me.

What is your bike and sponsor setup for 2009?

English: I have a big new challenge for 2009 because I’m gonna build up a team with one other fast French rider. So my main sponsors is MOREWOOD. I gonna buy truck trail and all what a team need. It’s a mountain of work but I believe it’s maybe the best way to be efficient. Currently with my school, training, the team organization and my girlfriend I’m just overwork and I’m scare to be tired before start the season! But Anyway with that amazing Morewood bikes I will take ride pleasure.

What do you think about our new site www.nsrmtb.co.za? There was barely any media coverage for DH/Freeride/4x so we thought we would build our own site.

English: It’s a pretty good idea; there are all what I like, moreover I could get news from SA mates so just keep this way…

The one photo where you are doing that huge jump over the rock garden was scary mon ami! I am glad that I got that shot first time?

English: You got it mon ami! I think I’m more glad than you, because do jump like that it’s not a 100% success so I wont imagine what happen when you crash here.

Francais: Tu l’as eu mon ami!

Do you remember we went riding the trails at Giba Gorge the one day and someone almost crashed into you? What happened?

English: hahaha, we were climbing up a single track when suddenly a rider downed in the wrong way then he grab his front brake as strong as possible and he just did a perfect front flip! But he land into a tree , it was so funny because he turn so fast! But I think he don’t thought it was that funny!

What was the first thing you did when you got back to France after your trip here?

English: First I ate real good French bread and cheese , not like your shitty bread and cheese then I slept with my girlfriend

I heard you drove a truck over Patrick Morewoods helmet in the warehouse by mistake. Is that true?

English: Yes that’s true, unfortunately you heard about one thing which I’m pretty gifted…it’s break everything! Sometime I break stuff because I’m rude as break MTB and sometime I break stuff because my body is here but mind is far away. And that what happen with Pat helmet.
