Strombergs and Le Corguillé take Copenhagen

In a build up to the 2012 Olympic Games the UCI BMX Supercross World Cups are growing in importance and popularity. 161 elite riders from 29 countries started in Copenhagen on Europe’s only permanent BMX Supercross track. The event kicked off with a qualifying individual time trial. The best 64 men and 32 women continued. The men continued to race in eight mottos and the women in four.
Maris Stromberg warned his competition with an impressive individual time trial result on Copenhagen’s challenging BMX track in 35.298 seconds. Australian Sam Willoughby was just a few hundreds of a second short to beat his Latvian rival in 35.536 seconds. Those time trial results promised another great battle between the two favourites Strombergs and Willoughby.
But BMX racing is hard to predict and anything can happen in an explosive 30 seconds adrenaline pumped race. Strombergs confirmed his winning form with overall victory and the strong muscular Latvian won the final in style. But Liam Phillips (GBR) was the surprise runner up in the men’s final as was third place finisher Corben Sharrah (USA). Australian Sam Willoughby and American Connor Fields did not make the podium as they did in the last two Supercross World Cups. Shanaze Reade from Great Britain was one of the female favourites for the title in Copenhagen as was 2009 World Champion Sarah Walker (NZL). Walker looked strong and determined after being out for such a long time but Le Corguillé outperformed all in Copenhagen. Aneta Hladíková (CZE) was third.
More than 3.000 spectators watched the spectacular racing in Copenhagen that is also home to the 2011 UCI BMX Supercross World Championships.
