SA DH National series #1 results
The fairest Cape played host to the first leg of the 2012 SA DH National series held this past weekend at Contermanskloof in Cape Town. With most of the country’s top riders in attendance, it was local hero Johann ‘Pottie’ Potgieter who walked away victorious on Sunday…
It was a breezy and fairly hot weekend in the Contermanskloof valley this weekend, and as could be expected the course was dry and dusty al weekend long and this lead to continually changing lines and ruts on the course. Unfortunately there were no shuttles on Friday and subsequently also no practice runs, but in light of the changing soft track surface this was not a major setback as the same course as last year was used.
The track has been ridden in well over the last few years and one can feel the track is being well maintained by Rob and his crew even though the overall conditions were dry and dusty, the berms have more support and there are less soft spots on the track compared to last year. The section after the road-gap still has the expected break bumps, but somehow they were more manageable compared to last year’s race and the rock garden felt strangely easier despite it being rutted out and shredded up as the riders passed through it on the weekend.
The soft and dry track conditions lead to a few expected tumbles with a number of riders making contact with terra firma throughout the weekend. Luckily there were no serious injuries besides Rika Olivier spraining her ankle and Ryan Frerichs of team Mongoose Superstars breaking his wrist after the last table top jump. We wish you a speedy recovery.
The race was well attended with 83 entrants and the likes of Stefan Garlicki, Andrew & Jonty Neethling, Johann Potgieter and Tiaan Odendaal to name but a few of our local top riders. The times were marginally quicker than last year and is indicative of a track bedding in well. Sunday morning saw a short early practice session before the seeding runs started, to determine the start order for the final timed run. Both Andrew Neethling and Stefan Garlicki suffered rear wheel punctures early in their seeding runs and were forced to start amongst the slower seeded riders. Pottie qualified in first place and managed to take the overall win, with Tiaan Odendaal clenching victory in the juniors category.
