World Champion Greg Minnaar returned to the downhill track to grab top honours at the South African National Cup.
It was a sweltering hot day in 3time World Champion Greg Minnaars’ home town as the Santa Cruz Syndicate rider returned to winning form and clinched not only the fastest qualifying spot, but also the top honours overall at the first South African Downhill MTB National Cup.
Minnaar has been recovering from an ACL replacement surgery, and using a specialised knee brace to protect his knee, still managed to show the rest of the field the class that he showed 6 months earlier when he clinched his 3rd World Championship jersey on much of the same track.
He however had some close competition from 2nd place Stefan Garlicki, who was the only other rider to break the 3:20 mark, placing his Investec Solid 27.5 wheeled bike 1.3 seconds back from Minnaar.
3rd place went to 19year old Sam Bull, who showed great speed on board his 27.5 Morewood.
4th place Honours went to Minnaar Cycles rider and defending champion Tiaan Odendaal while Tim Bentley rode his Specialized onto the podium in 5th.
Rd 2 Will take place on a brand new track on the border of Lesotho, at the Afriski resort.
